A summer full of meetings

This summer I had the big pleasure to make a Trip around France to discover the animals of zooes and their owners. It drove me from the aquarium of Biarritz to this of Saint-Malo, with a stop in Alligator Bay, on the road of the Mont Saint-Michel.

My trip brought me up to British lands, on the island of Jersey. There, I was very touched by Gérald Durrell's statue, represented during a journey on the Malagasy island, holding out the hand to a lemur, a gecko of Madagascar put on his right-hand side. Very important character of my youth, he revolutionized the modern zooes. I feel like being able to speak with this naturalist, founder of the zoo of Jersey opened in March 1959. I spent my childhood with the narratives of his journeys discovering animals and nature. He was the first who put zoo on the way of preservation. Today numerous wildlife parks followed his ideas.

Coming down again southward, I stopped in Doué-La-Fontaine's biopark, where I had the pleasure to be welcomed by three generations of this passionate family: Louis, Pierre and François Gay. Their park, opened to the public in July 14th 1961, is a pure happiness. It remains for me the most attractive wildlife park we can find on the hexagon. It's made aesthetically, in harmony and with respect for the animals. I am sure they'll soon handle the presentation of reptiles with the same talent they show for the others species, and particulary in the realization of the magnificent aviary which they have just offered to their boarders and visitors.

By way of Farm of crocodiles of Pierrelatte, I had the surprise to meet Jean-Louis Borloo (Former Minister for Ecology) accompanied with Marie-Pierre Mouton, general and regional councillor of Drôme, and Franck Reynier, deputy and mayor of Montélimar. Beyond a very informed personality, I discovered a man of big sensibility. He was very interested by all the work made by the team of Farm of crocodiles since the first day, by efforts makes in favour of the pedagogy, and for the development of the work of scientists. What particularly delighted me was to observe him stopping in front of gharials, charmed by their aesthetics. I besides appreciated his simplicity.

My last summer visit was for the exhibition of reptiles organized by Marc and Patricia Jaeger in Zurich. The presentation was successful. I appreciated that Marc dedicated all his heart and so much time tos pedagogy for the public. An implication which would have also delighted Gérald Durrell.
